Downtown church plans service marking 3,000th death of U.S. troops in Iraq

The First Unitarian Church in Portland will have an interfaith service Tuesday memorializing the 3,000th U.S. military death in Iraq. It will run from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Salmon Street sanctuary, 1011 S.W. 12th Ave.

The service will be led by Tom Disrud, associate minister; Kate Lore, director of social justice; and David Leslie, director of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. It is open to all.

The candlelight service will include a litany of interfaith scriptures on peace, moments of silence and music. The name of every Oregon soldier who has died will be listed in the program. Individuals may light candles and recite names in honor of those individuals.

It's great to see that some are stepping up and honoring these veterans and keeping them in their prayers. When some "hate churches" are attending funerals of the military and protesting, it's much better to see this happening. My friend, Q Madp, photographs most of the memorial services in the Oregon and Pacific Northwest, as well as any other Memorial services, such as tributes to our fallen soldiers. He is in the Salem News quite often for his efforts (one of the few media sources that posts the efforts of those who support our soldiers). Thanks, Dan, for posting this as well! oh ya, he also runs the site www.iraqwarheroes.org and lists EVERY soldier who served in iraq and died, including those who have died stateside after their tours, so his numbers have climbed higher than 3000. he could always use donations for gas money, as he travels by car to these memorials throughout the pacific northwest and uses really good camera equipment and provides literally thousands of photos to the family members and to the internet as family allows.
much love,
karen
