(AP) — Nintendo announced a partnership with former rivals Thursday intended to boost the library of downloadable classic video games for the company's upcoming Revolution console.
The agreement covers some of the more than 1,000 games made by Sega and Hudson Soft for the now defunct Sega Genesis console and the TurboGrafx 16 system, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said.
The Revolution's planned Virtual Console download service was already expected to also play older Nintendo-made games like Mario Bros and Zelda.
"No one else can match the environment we're creating for expanding the game experience to everyone," said Iwata, speaking at the Game Developer's Conference in San Jose.

U.S. Military Has New Online Mental Health Resource
U.S. military personnel and their families now have a free, anonymous Web-based mental health and alcohol self-assessment program. The service is available worldwide and provides immediate results, plus referrals to military mental health services.
The program -- offered through the nonprofit organization Screening for Mental Health -- is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense Office of Health Affairs and screens for a number of common problems that often go undiagnosed. It enables users to identify their individual symptoms and to seek help before the situation becomes urgent.

Apple's world turning upside down?
In a stunning move, BAPCo, the industry-standard Windows benchmarking consortium, announced that Apple Computer has joined up as a member.
This is significant because it means that Apple has now committed to Windows-based performance testing, and it will influence industry-standard testing methodologies going forward, possibly including Mac OS X testing. There is speculation that Apple will now develop Windows drivers for Intel Macs like the iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Pro with Intel Core Duo processors.
It will likely remain necessary for a user to purchase their own copy of Windows XP (or Vista), but this news remains significant, to say the least.

Suns on national TV Thursday... and a nice ceremony for "Miller Time"
The Indiana Pacers will honor Reggie Miller by retiring his jersey at halftime of Thursday's game against the Phoenix Suns on TNT.
"To know that No. 31 will be hanging from the rafters ... it'll be a special night," said Miller, now a TNT basketball analyst.
"He's the most significant player in the last 20 years, maybe 30," Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said. "Since our ABA days. Reggie is the one who made our transformation to the NBA real."
He's best known for "Miller Time." When the game was on the line, Miller always wanted to take the big shot.
"He's made as many clutch shots as anybody who has ever played this game," said team president Larry Bird.

Go big blue!
The Bluetooth wireless standard used in cell phones and other small devices will take a leap in transmission speed, broadening its scope to enable high-definition video and files for digital music players like the iPod.
The industry group behind Bluetooth said Tuesday that it would boost transfer speeds in the next few years by incorporating a new radio technology, known as ultra-wideband, or UWB.
Currently, Bluetooth works only for low-speed uses like headsets and wireless keyboards.

He's BACK!
Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports that Suns forward AmarĂ© Stoudemire will return to action tonight at home against Portland — as a starter.
It’s official.
“We want to warm him up,” Suns coach Mike D’Antoni said after the Suns’ shootaround at US Airways Center this morning. “He’ll probably go the first three to four minutes and we’ll see how it goes and how he goes. We want to win games.”
Stoudemire has not played this season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee in October.

Ohhhh THURSDAY!!!
PHOENIX (AP) -- Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire is close to returning from a knee injury that has sidelined him all season.
After participating in 5-on-5 drills with teammates for the third time in four days, Stoudemire said Wednesday there's an 80 percent chance he'll play Thursday night against Portland. He said he would decide whether to play in the morning.
"If it feels good, then it's possible that I'll play," Stoudemire said. "The way it's feeling, it feels pretty good. I feel like I'm real close."
He joked with reporters who asked about whether he planned to issue a press release to announce his return.
"I may show up in street clothes and rip off the Superman cape," Stoudemire said.
Asked whether the opponent would dictate the timing of his return, Stoudemire smiled and recalled that he had set a career high with 50 points against Portland on Jan. 2, 2005.
"I know the last time we played Portland, I had 50," Stoudemire said. "Hint, hint."
The Suns don't expect that sort of production from Stoudemire immediately.
"He's got some pop to his game," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "That's encouraging."

Downtown Portland Iraq War Protest
Google stands up to the man
U.S. District Judge James Ware ruled Google Inc. won't have to disclose to the Bush administration what people have been looking for on its widely used search engine, handing a significant victory to the company and privacy rights advocates.
"We will always be subject to government subpoenas, but the fact that the judge sent a clear message about privacy is reassuring," Google lawyer Nicole Wong wrote on the company's Web site Friday night. "What his ruling means is that neither the government nor anyone else has carte blanche when demanding data from Internet companies."

Memo: Haliburton failed to protect water in Iraq
WASHINGTON (AP) - Halliburton Co. failed to protect the water supply it is paid to purify for U.S. soldiers throughout Iraq, in one instance missing contamination that could have caused "mass sickness or death," an internal company report concluded.
Classy guy
Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic writes:
Nash did commercials for MDG, a Canadian computer company, and used his pay to cover half the costs of a new intensive care post-operative pediatric cardiology ward in Paraguay. Nash paid for the other half, too.
There was no neonatal care unit or operating room at Hospital del Clinicas in Asuncion, Paraguay, where his wife, Alejandra, grew up. He said it was one of the most fulfilling things he has ever done.
"This is paramount for the children," said Nash, whose charitable foundation targets youth causes. "The kids either have to fly to Brazil or, unfortunately, a lot of them die."

James Brings Arizona Fans Hope
The woeful Cardinals were the franchise making national headlines Sunday, becoming credible and a playoff contender with one powerful stroke after signing 28 year old Colts superstar Edgerrin James.Since moving to Arizona in 1988, the Cardinals have had just three running backs rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
James rushed for more than 1,200 yards in five of his seven seasons in Indianapolis.
In 95 games, James has rushed for at least 100 yards 49 times.
Last year, the Cardinals rushed for 100 yards just once.
As a team.

Not to say I told you so.... but....
More and more people, particularly Republicans, disapprove of President Bush's performance, question his character and no longer consider him a strong leader against terrorism, according to an AP-Ipsos poll documenting one of the bleakest points of his presidency.
Nearly four out of five Americans, including 70 percent of Republicans, believe civil war will break out in Iraq — where many consider Bush has staked his presidency. Nearly 70 percent of people say the U.S. is on the wrong track, a 6-point jump since February.
The survey found that just 37 percent approve of his overall performance. That is the lowest of his presidency.

Boris who?
So, when you think of the NBA's most statistically efficient centers, you might pick Shaq, or Duncan, or Yao. Well, there's another name you need to add to that list.Boris.
Six foot eight inch massively undersized Boris Diaw of the Phoenix Suns moved to starting center for the past six games with Kurt Thomas out and has averaged 19 points, 9.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists in that stretch. His shooting has reached 64.3 percent in those games. In Tuesday's USA Today, the 215 pound Diaw was named the NBA's top center in a statistical comparison.

Surf fo' free...
T-Mobile is offering free Wi-Fi access to its customers every weekend at 6,500 T-Mobile HotSpot locations throughout the country (which include Starbucks).
I do believe internet access in hotels and coffee shops should be free anyhow (given that you're likely paying for coffee and such) ...but be that as it may, this is a nice move by T-Mobile for its cutomers.
Hopefully this will inspire other cell carriers and internet service providers to follow suit.
For details, visit http://hotspot.t-mobile.com/freeweekends/
